One year ago Mona and I were debating whether or not to open an Ebay store. Once we found out the cost and fees involved we knew it was not the direction we wanted to go. After all, our handmade goodies would be being sold right next to stuff made in factories. We wished for a marketplace like the dreaded Ebay that would sell only handmade things and so the guys at Etsy heard our plea and created Etsy just for us! (ok.. well, maybe not just for us.. but we like to think so!)

Crocheting up a storm

All this cool weather here in south Florida has inspired me to get out the yarn again!

I've taken up crocheting. My motivation is that I really want to learn to make amigurumi. They are just about the most adorable things in the world! I just downloaded a pattern for an adorable little bee from www.Roxycraft.com. I'm too clumsy with patterns to attemp it yet. A few months ago I bought this cozy crochet kit. It's like the Stitch It kit by Jenny Hart, but for crochet. It has a little guide and a bunch of patterns. I decided to tackle the crochet flower pattern first. It took about 10 minutes to get going on it and by flower number 3 I was crocheting like an expert ;) Well they are pretty basic, but very cute. I put a few for sale in my etsy shop. I embellished them with vintage buttons and pin backs. I plan to put a few on barrettes too. I've made 4 scarves in the past 2 days that I'm going to try to sell this weekend. I sold one last weekend, the first scarf I ever made! I'll kinda miss it, but I sold it to Harolds cousin, so I can visit it whenever I want, lol!

The Miami Craft Mafia has been so busy! We've had shows every weekend for the past month and have another this Saturday. We'll be at Shenley Park in Miami (Coral Gables). There will be a small art festival there and lot of family activities. It's supposed to be really nice out.

Miami Craft Mafia member PuchiMaiko was robbed last night :(

Sadly one of our members had her entire stock of merchandice stolen from the back of a truck while we were in an art gallery in Downtown Miami. We were there discussing an upcoming show that we will be doing on Dec.17th. Downtown is not known for being the safest place after dark and after this experience I can assure you that we will all be far more careful in the future. We are all heart broken and sick over this. We drove around for a while after to see if we found anyone with her boxes or the jogging stroller that was taken, but had no luck. Naomi plans to file a police report today. Naomi (puchiMaiko) added up the value of her items stolen and it was nearly 3000$ Please visit her site to look over a list of the items that were taken.

Last night we attended a small craft show at a library on the library on the campus of the University of Miami. It was only 2 hours long and geared toward staff and students. But it was a lot of fun and we sold a few things. I drank too much Pinot Grigio! Here are a few pictures :)

On Dec. 3rd and 4th, we had our first ever Black Sheep Arts and Crafts show in Hollywood Florida. Considering that we only did free online advertising, I'd say that we had a very nice turn out. Each of our vendors was very happy with the turn out. We also met lots of great crafty people who may be interested in joining us in the future. Here are a few pictures for you all to enjoy!

Our first TV appearance will be this week on Friday the 23rd on the Telemundo network. We will be on a show called Al Rojo Vivo doing a belly casting on a pregnant woman. We will then demonstrate finishing and painting the casting. It came out very nice and I am looking forward to the show airing! I hope you enjoy the pictures.

We've all seen the destruction that Hurricane Katrina has caused. It will take many years for these people to regain what was lost.

Working hard

Heather and I have been working very hard to get the Miami Craft Mafia and the craft fair (I think we have a name!) off the ground. So far, we've found a half dozen or so interested people and I'm very excited about what each of them will bring to the group. The businesses are each very unique and emphasize the independant crafter spirit that the original Craft Mafia is all about.

Heather has been in Iowa on vacation for a week or 2 now, there have not been any major changes to the website or store right now. We will be getting our shopping cart in place once she returns so that we can start doing sales directly from the site without having to link out to the etsy store.

Well, that is about it for now! Hopefully our next update will be full of great news!

Broken printer AND digital camera!

When it rains it pours. About 2 months ago my computer monitor died. It was old and a monster! It took up the entire desk space. I replaced it with a sleek little flat panel monitor. They are much cheaper these days. Then went the printer. I replaced it with a surprisingly cheap model. The printer cost less than it would have cost me to buy new ink for the old one. Go figure!

A few weeks ago the sewing machine bit the dust. It was from freecycle, so I wasn't expecting too much. It kept jamming up. I had already spent around 100$ fixing it and figured I needed to let it go. I hit some thrift shops and found a lovely 30 year old Singer for 15$. A tune up for another 30 and it runs like a dream.

Now, my new printer bit the dust. I was printing out shipping labels and one sheet got jammed inside. It got all gummed up inside. In my effort to clean it out, I snapped off some piece that is apparently necessary. Ah well, it was out of ink anyway :P

Now, I can't seem to get my digital camera to allow me to remove pictures from the card into the computer. I called Panasonic to see who would work on it and they told me that I had to mail it to some place in Illinois and the minimum charge would be 249$ just to look at it. It was at this point I questioned whether the guy on the phone had been dropped as a baby. I did some calling around for a place in Miami to help and found a shop that does in house repairs. He said if it is something that he can do quickly in the shop, he'll do it for free (how cool is that??) but if it's more complicated, the minimum charge is 35$. He said that they wouldn't do any work without my approval and would tell me exactly how much it would cost before hand. Sounds good to me. I did some searching on eBay and can get the same camera for about 150$. Sure beats the 650$ we spent on it 2 years ago. Hopefully it will all work out and I will not be completely broke before all is done!

So Ive been making these funky totebags for a few months now and they sell pretty well on this amazing little crafty site called Etsy. I sell a few a week, nothing to make me rich, at least not YET! haha! But I got a featured product spot on the front page of the site twice now which feels great, since they were chosen out of thousands! And just today I got an email from the editor of "Craft Revolution" that my bags were chosen as the highlighted indie product! This is very exciting since that is one of the biggest craft sites online. And the editor said that she will keep my bags up in the archives forever :o)) I'm so excited!! Lets hope it generates some sales, lol!

New Tote bags!

I've added 3 lovely new tote bags to the shop. These are made from new home dec canvas, rather than the vintage canvas I have been using. The colors are really nice and bright. Heather likes that the handles are green on 2 and orange on the other. Stay tuned because a Mamadelic signature tote bag is in the works!

Mona and I set up shop at the organic farmer's market in Coconut Grove yesterday. It was hot. Sales were dismal. It got hotter. It was probably around 95º and 80% humidity. We did get to chat with some fans who stopped by our tent and the raw food spread is always delish so it wasn't a total loss. Come stop by and check us out, get some free stuff and ya gotta try the stuffed mushrooms!

Got a new sewing machine!

Horray! Im so happy. I was at my wits end with the last one. It was jamming up every time I attempted to sew. The guy at the machine shop said it was not a very good machine to begin with. Ah well, I got it from FreeCycle so no big loss! The new one is about 30 years old. I got it at a great North Miami Beach thrift shop called Red, White, and Blue. They give all profits to the Veterans of Foriegn Wars. It was 14.99 and the clutch was seized. I took it the the sewing machine shop and Juan said he could fix it. 3 days and 40$ later it sews like a dream! Hopefully it will last longer than the last one. What is it about sewing machine shops being totally skanky? Heather and I were just talking about how all the sewing centers are filthy dirty, stink like cigar smoke and have some extrodinarily greasy guys working there. Oh, and the pattern books from 1986, how to make your own quilted, appliqued Christmas vest :op
Maybe they are better in other parts of the country.

Welcome to Mamadelic! Over the past few months, my good friend Heather and I have been brainstorming about ways that the 2 of us could combine our love of creating hand-made stuff with out need to earn money. We thought that we could open a little boutique in town, but the amount of time it takes to build a stock in addition to trying to raise capital seemed beyond our reach. Along came etsy! Etsy has come along at just the right time for us. It has allowed us the chance to showcase our products while we work diligently on our new website, which should be ready soon.
